As a livery yard owner, the services you offer may range from DIY and grass livery services—whereby horse owners enter your yard daily to maintain their horses—to a full livery service in which you or your employees undertake full care duties of horses. Whatever service you provide, a strong livery yard insurance policy is essential in keeping you protected throughout the year.
If a customer or employee suffers an injury on your land, you could be liable. If your property becomes damaged or suffers a flood or fire, you will have to provide the costs to keep your venture from drifting. Or if a horse becomes sick or injured, you could also be liable. This is where livery yard insurance protects you. At SEIB, we endeavour to alleviate such risks by way of a comprehensive policy that protects you from the inside out.
No matter the size of livery yard or the services it provides, SEIB can find a policy tailored to your needs. The protection we provide aims to reflect how you operate, and can include:
- Cover for public liability, protecting damage up to £10 million
- Cover for employers’ liability, protecting you and your employees
- Care, custody and control to protect you and your employees when caring for the horses, with an indemnity limit of £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000 per horse
- Property owners’ insurance for both commercial and domestic, covering buildings, contents and business interruption
- Discounts of up to 25% for BHS Approved Centres (minimum premiums apply)

Frequently Asked Questions
The minimum insurance most livery yards will need is Public Liability and Care Custody and Control. If you have anyone helping you on the yard with the business then it is a legal requirement to also have Employers’ Liability. Other insurance to consider would also be contents and buildings cover, Legal expenses and Personal Accident cover.
SEIB’s policies can be tailored to cover most equestrian activities. We can include cover for hiring out of your facilities including your arena, cross country course and show jumping paddock. The hire can be for individuals to use for a single hire or for larger groups to hire all the facilities for a camp or event they are running.
If you have other peoples horses stabled or kept on your yard then this would still be classed as a livery yard and the appropriate insurance would be needed.
If you do pony parties or rides, you will need additional insurance. If you do this on your own premises we can add this activity to your yard insurance or if you only do this activity off site then we can do a standalone Pony Party Insurance policy.
SEIB can cater for most types of yards from private yards to large Equestrian Centres and everything in between including stud farms, competition yards, Riding School Insurance and breaking, training and dealing yards.
The cost of livery yard insurance can vary widely depending on several factors, including the size of the yard, the number of horses and staff, the types of services offered, and the level of cover required.
