Elle Godber delivered an impeccable performance to claim victory in the SEIB Winter Novice Championship Qualifier at Arena UK’s Winter Classic, riding the impressive Montreal H.

The Nottinghamshire-based rider executed smooth, precise lines and demonstrated exceptional timing to secure her win, earning her one of two coveted qualifying spots for the prestigious SEIB Winter Novice Championship, held at Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead.

“A Dream Horse”

“Montreal is so special; I’ve always believed in him,” Elle shared. “If I could create a horse from scratch, it would be him. Today, everything came together perfectly.”

Her triumph marks another milestone as she prepares to make her debut in Hickstead’s renowned international arena next year. “I’ve competed at Hickstead before but never in the main ring,” Elle added, reflecting on this exciting opportunity.

A Challenging Path to Victory

Mark McGowan’s 1.10m, 11-fence course with 14 efforts tested the 59 competitors, with only 24 progressing to the jump-off. In the second round, the challenge intensified as riders pushed for speed, resulting in just seven clear rounds.

Ella Popely briefly held the lead aboard Cadence VD Donkhoeve Z, but Elle’s composed and deceptively fast performance edged her into the top spot by a razor-thin margin of 0.09 seconds.

“He has so much canter and is incredibly responsive,” Elle explained. “I’ve worked hard to prepare him for this event, including adjusting his tack and competing in several classes this week to build his confidence. My husband Louis encouraged me to trust him and focus on our plan—it paid off!”

A Bittersweet Victory

Elle’s win carried emotional weight, coming just five weeks after the passing of her father-in-law, Kirk. “He was a huge part of our lives and believed in Montreal,” Elle said. “I know he’d have been thrilled to see this.”

Rising Star: Montreal H

Montreal H, a seven-year-old gelding by Zirocco Blue out of Ma Cherie Z, was bred by Jasmin Head of Highnam Court Equestrian. Purchased by Elle and Louis as a four-year-old, Montreal has grown into a towering 17.1hh, requiring careful and patient training.

Despite his size and spirited nature, Elle describes Montreal as the best horse she has ever ridden. “He’s sharp, brave, and loves to jump, but he’s still green and occasionally spooky. He’s also loving with our kids and has a big personality,” Elle shared.

Looking ahead to Hickstead, Elle is optimistic. “Montreal still has room to grow, but I feel he’ll shine on the big stage.”
